Baby essentials

When asked, “how’s it going with 3?” I told a good friend, we don’t have any bad days but we may have a few bad hours. Wyatt is 2 weeks old and we have learned a lot and are trying to get into our groove as a family of five.

Anyway, as baby has been very sleepy still, we try to keep things as normal as possible for the big brothers. Of course they adore their baby brother and still have many questions about him and what he does (does the baby have to fart again?), but they mostly go about their business and play together so well just like always. We have seen a bit of jealousy from the older ones and am trying my best to appropriately share my time and attention. Easier said than done.

As baby sleeps, I try to keep up with the laundry, dishes, dinner, email, taking a shower(!), studying for my economics class, and spend time with the big boys when they are home. We send them to school just like normal too, of course. Also, it has been key for me to get an afternoon nap to help make it through the evening. I am up feeding Wyatt 2-3 times during the night and sometimes it’s for a whole hour. I know this will get better as he gets older…

Anyway, another thing that really helps is when baby sleeps, I try to keep our supplies and necessities replenished and easily available. It sounds so simple but really helps when a squirmy newborn who hates to get cold needs a quick change.  We have a changing station in the living room so that we don’t have to go upstairs to the nursery every time. (It’s been 3 years since we have had a newborn and I forgot how many times baby goes #2 each day! We go through at least 12 diapers a day right now.) Actually, we have hardly spent any time in Wyatt’s room yet since he sleeps in our room. I keep diapers, blankets, burp cloths and changes of clothes in our room and his room and the living room.

Here is my stash of necessities-

We use Desitin with every change to try to prevent diaper rash.

We have been using alcohol free wipes because regular wipes actually sting and hurt as the circumcision heals.

Hydration, hydration- lanolin, chapstick and scent free lotion for Mama. We keep the house well heated because Wyatt shakes when he gets a little cold and so I’ve been getting dry skin and really chapped lips.

Wubbanub- I never understood why the animal was attached. I totally get it now- to hold the pacifier in place.

Baby brush- this boy has tons of hair. But this reminds me, I need to wash that brush, Deacon was using it on the dog yesterday 😕

Johnson’s hand and face wipes- nothing smells better than these! I use these or a warm wet cloth to wipe his hands and little face daily.

His umbilical cord will fall off any day now and we can give him a real bath. Since the hospital, he’s had a couple of quick baths in his Puj tub in the sink. Excessive crying makes for super quick baths.
It’s a ton of work but at the end of the day, you may get rewarded with a super sweet and quick smile.

Ok, that’s all for now.  Gotta go, baby is awake. 😁
